MidBoss, the developer and publisher behind 2064: Read Only Memories and its sequel, Neurodiver, has filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy.
This comes from a voluntary petition filed this past June, which states that MidBoss has only $2,560 in assets and property, while it owes $823,272 to creditors. $138,980 of that total is listed across four separate loans, $64,000 is owed to one individual as revenue share, and royalty shares are owed to around a dozen individuals in varying amounts totaling $87,985. There is also $36,099 in credit card debut, $7,000 owed to Chase Bank, and a disputed equity claim owed to Tom Kaitchuck totaling $404,538.
Additionally, the filing lists Matt Conn as owing repayment on a shareholder loan totaling $70,922 and a royalty share of $13,748. Matt Conn is listed as the interim CEO on the filing and has signed off on the bankruptcy. Matt Conn is one of the founders of MidBoss who created the company out of GaymerX in 2013, but the company announced in 2018 that he had stepped down after former employees accused him of abuse and sexual harassment.
At the time, Cade Petersen stepped in as interim CEO, though Conn still owned 40 percemt of the company. Peterson remained as CEO until 2025, when he seems to have quietly left the company. Peterson was succeeded by Alexander Mehrer, with Conn writing on LinkedIn last year that he was “supporting new CEO Alex Mehrer through critical restructuring efforts that position the studio for its next chapter.” Mehrer’s LinkedIn lists him as having “restored the dormant studio after stalled operations” and “quickly reassembled key contracts and documentation, identified and addressed ongoing risks, reopened revenue streams and partnerships, and left the studio in clean working order to step forward into its next era,” and states that he left in August of last year. Per the filing, Conn appears to have taken over since then and still holds a 40-percent stake in the studio.
The Read Only Memories IP as well as MidBoss’ Gaming in Color documentary are both listed as assets without a stated value. It is unclear what will become of Read Only Memories, which received a sequel in 2024 entitled Neurodiver that was delayed repeatedly over four years and which received middling reviews. MidBoss currently has two in-progress titles listed on its website: All AI Must Die and The Artificial Artist. Their status is also unknown.
