Sebastian Fundora finally made the first defense of his WBC and WBO junior middleweight titles, one year after he won them from Tim Tszyu in a major upset.
However, that fight didn’t come against Errol Spence Jr. as planned — that would have been a pay-per-view headliner. Instead, Fundora shook off the rust with a dominant fourth-round TKO of Chordale Booker, a 33-year-old first-time title challenger who was a long-odds underdog.
Fundora utilized his massive height advantage at 6-foot-5 1/2 to bust up the 5-foot-9 Booker behind the southpaw jab en route to the stoppage.
Fundora remains ESPN’s No. 2 junior middleweight behind Terence Crawford, who is unlikely to compete at 154 pounds again following a planned September bout with Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds.
On Saturday’s undercard in Las Vegas, Jesus Ramos competed for the second time in as many months with a seventh-round TKO of Guido Emmanuel Schramm. Schramm accepted the fight on short notice after Kevin Salgado withdrew. Ramos remains ESPN’s No. 8 junior middleweight. In February, he stopped former champion Jeison Rosario in Round 8.
On Saturday in Sydney, former undisputed lightweight champion George Kambosos made his 140-pound debut with a decision victory over Jake Wyllie. Wyllie replaced Daud Yordan the week of the fight.
Kambosos was ranked No. 7 at 135 pounds but now exits for 140, where he’ll remain unranked until he fights someone in the top 10. That should come in June with an expected title challenge against Richardson Hitchins.
Zaur Abdullaev enters at lightweight. Abdullaev will fight fellow contender Raymond Muratalla on May 10.
ESPN’s divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven’t competed in the past 12 months — and don’t have a fight scheduled — will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to reenter the rankings after his next bout.
